CAW Local 504 members at appliance maker Camco made their last appliance November 18, after the company shut down the Hamilton, Ontario plant ending 90 years of production at the facility.
The plant closing was announced last year and CAW Local 504 members voted in favour of a closure agreement in January that provided improvements in pensions and extended healthcare benefit coverage following layoff. The plant employed approximately 600 workers, but at its peak provided work for 1,400. Over the decades the plant has produced a number of items including lamps and military equipment during WW II, but has produced appliances for years. Camco was the last Canadian manufacturer of a full line of appliances.
